International Moving

Project Scope – International Moving and Installation Project

We were engaged to bring an automatic forming and welding machine (line) which produced wheels for combine harvesters from Milan to the UK for GKN Wheels.  This huge production line was currently installed and in use in a factory in Milan.  The line which had to be dismantled there would eventually comprise fourteen articulated lorry loads with some heavy loads with the largest piece weighing thirty tons and some very tall sections.

Solutions

Our engineers went out to Milan for four weeks to carry out the dismantling for which we sourced a local 100 ton mobile crane, two ten ton capacity forklifts and a 15 ton “Iron Fairy”.

The machinery was loaded onto specialist low-loaders (to cope with heights of 3.5 metres in some cases) and semi-low loaders brought from the UK. Once the machinery arrived in the UK the same team installed it using an in-situ 35 ton overhead crane onto a base prepared in advance by the civil engineering contractors.

In all, the project took nine weeks once the dismantling stage commenced. Our earlier planning stage had involved two advance site visits to Italy to measure up and organise the move.  We also needed to work very closely with the electrical contractors.

Result and Client Benefits

As a result of successfully completing this project we were appointed to move a second forming machine for making forklift wheels from Milan to Armstrong, Iowa, USA.

Speak to us if you are planning an international equipment move as each project is very individual and this page can only give a snapshot of what we can do.
