Project Scope – Monumental Artwork Installation

Jack Waghorn International was commissioned by Jarvale Construction on behalf of the Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation to install the monumental artwork: Double Somersault, designed by local artist, William Pye.

Solutions

Our first step was to carry out a site visit to plan the installation. Our technical engineer then prepared and agreed with the client and all stakeholders the installation plan, CAD lifting plans, risk assessments and health and safety protocols.

The main technical challenge our engineer faced was that of access. Not only would the route involve passing very close to trees with preservation orders and listed buildings but a road closure was also needed in what is a very busy part of Sheffield. Our project management team arranged a full road closure (including traffic management) with the local authority, Sheffield City Council, and timed the positioning for the early morning (before rush hour) to minimise the traffic disruption in this busy area.

On the day the 3.4 metre tall sculpture was positioned by one of our experienced installation teams. The 1.4 tonne sculpture, Double Somersault, was made from tubular Sheffield stainless steel as a single piece. It was delivered in a horizontal position requiring the use of both a mobile crane and a lorry mounted HIAB-type crane operating in tandem in a very restricted area, to offload and turn the sculpture to the vertical.

The final positioning was successfully finished just after dawn, with the statue successfully positioned as a new centre piece for the garden of Weston Park Museum.
